How to Study Lab Values for the NCLEX-RN®: Reason, Don’t Memorize
Memorizing normal ranges is the easiest part of lab values, and the least tested. NGN-style NCLEX-RN® questions hand you the number and ask what you do about it. The skill that answers them is a repeatable way of reasoning from result to safe nursing action. That is what this post teaches.
Why does memorizing lab values fail on NGN-style questions?
Because the exam rarely asks "what is the range?" It presents a client, a value, and four plausible actions, and rewards the one that addresses the danger first. A memorized 3.5–5.0 mEq/L tells you a potassium of 6.8 is high. It does not tell you what to do in the next sixty seconds — and that decision is the question.
